History of the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center
The West Los Angeles VA Medical Center has served veterans since 1888, when the 388-acre campus was deeded to the federal government by Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker and Senator John P. Jones to establish a home for disabled Civil War veterans. It was originally established as the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (NHDVS).Â

The medical center provides comprehensive mental health care through psychology, psychiatry, and social work. The Psychiatric Section is a 125-bed service with emphasis on acute intensive care. The Domiciliary at West LA VA Medical Center, officially known as a Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MH RRTP), is the largest of its kind in the nation and houses roughly 200 veterans undergoing treatment for substance use and/or mental health issues. There are nine tracks for veterans, including those for mental health, substance use, women only, and detox.Â
Polytrauma and Traumatic Brain Injury
The West Los Angeles Polytrauma Network Site is one of 23 facilities in the country designed to provide long-term rehabilitative care to veterans and service members who experienced severe injuries (including brain injuries) to more than one organ system. It serves Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) veterans.Â
Community Living Center
The Community Living Center (CLC) on the North Campus provides long-term care with 178 beds. It offers preventive, acute, sub-acute, chronic, maintenance, and hospice care to veterans with complex and varying healthcare needs.Â
Adaptive Sports
The adaptive sports program helps disabled veterans live active and healthy lives through recreation and athletics. Programs include the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, National Veterans Golden Age Games, National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, National Disabled Veterans Golf Clinic, and National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic.Â

The plan was approved in April 2022 by Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough. 701 MacArthur Ave:Â The newest and largest residence on campus, with 69 units now open.Â
Two new supportive housing buildings:Â Groundbreaking was celebrated in May 2024 for two buildings that will provide 87 new units for veterans experiencing homelessness.Â
220 temporary units:Â VA issued a request for proposals in May 2026 to build approximately 220 temporary units on the North Campus. By the end of 2026, the campus will have the capacity to house 1,670 veterans.Â
National Center for Warrior Independence
A newly developed National Center for Warrior Independence at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center combines medication management, supportive psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, job training, and housing support.Â
