Common Mistakes to Avoid

Veterans and families applying for Idaho State Veterans Homes frequently make these errors.

  1. Not contacting the Admission Department first. Call (208) 246-8736 to understand requirements before completing the application.

  2. Assuming the home is free. Veterans must either qualify for Medicaid or pay the maximum monthly charge. Financial planning is essential.

  3. Forgetting to apply for VA pension and Aid & Attendance. These benefits can significantly offset care costs, and IDVS assists with the application.

  4. Providing incomplete documentation. Missing DD-214, proof of residency, or insurance cards delays the application.

  5. Not verifying Idaho residency requirements. You must be a bona fide Idaho resident at the time of admission.

  6. Assuming all homes offer all levels of care. Residential and domiciliary care are only available at the Boise home. Spouses are only eligible for nursing care, not residential or domiciliary care.

  7. Missing the waiting list reality. The Boise home has a perpetual waiting list, especially during construction. Apply early and consider other Idaho homes.

Post Falls Home Operations

The Post Falls Veterans Home, dedicated on November 11, 2022, continues to accept applications. It is the newest facility in the Idaho system.

Financial Eligibility Updates

Idaho Administrative Rules (IDAPA 21.01.01) govern admission, residency, and maintenance charges. The rules were last updated in 2022 and remain in effect. An applicant whose monthly net income exceeds the maximum VA pension rate for a single veteran cannot be admitted unless granted a waiver.
