You’re eligible to enroll now—without needing to apply for disability benefits first—if you meet basic service/discharge requirements and:
Served in the Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, or any combat zone after 9/11, or
Deployed in support of the Global War on Terror, or
Were exposed to toxins or hazards during service
Eligible locations include:
Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman (August 2, 1990, or after September 11, 2001)
Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Guam, American Samoa, Johnston Atoll
What it is: Tax-free monetary benefit payable to low-income wartime Veterans who meet age or disability requirements.
Who qualifies:
Did not receive a dishonorable discharge
Yearly family income and net worth meet limits set by Congress
Served at least 90 days active duty with at least one day during wartime
At least 65 years old OR have a permanent and total disability OR are in a nursing home OR receive SSDI/SSI
Net worth limit: From December 1, 2025, to November 30, 2026, the net worth limit is $163,699.
