What Is the DVA Pension Increase?

The DVA pension increase is a regular indexation that helps ensure your payments keep up with the cost of living .

Veterans Benefits & Resources
Helpful information about VA benefits, disability, healthcare and services for veterans.

What it is: Most DVA pension and compensation payments are indexed twice a year, in March and September. Indexation is determined by either the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI), or Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MTAWE) . For the March 2026 increase, the rate was set by the CPI.

What Is the Service Pension vs Disability Compensation?

Understanding the difference between these key payments is important.

Service Pension

What it is: An income support pension for veterans with qualifying service, broadly equivalent in structure to the Age Pension. It is means-tested based on your income and assets .

See also
How to File VA Form 21-526EZ Online: A Step-by-Step Guide

Who qualifies: Veterans with qualifying service can access the Service Pension from age 60 — seven years before the Centrelink Age Pension age of 67 .

Why it matters: The Service Pension uses identical payment rates and the same income and assets test framework as the Centrelink Age Pension. Veterans on the Service Pension do not separately apply for the Age Pension at 67 .

Disability Compensation Payment (DCP)

What it is: A tax-free compensation payment for veterans with service-related injuries or illnesses, including the T&PI (Special Rate) .

Who qualifies: Veterans who have accepted conditions that are related to their service.

Why it matters: DCP is exempt from both income and assets tests and is fully additive to any pension entitlement. This means if you receive DCP plus a Service Pension or Age Pension, you get both payments .

How the TPI and SRDP Changes Affect You

Important change: From 1 July 2026, the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 (VEA) and DRCA close to new claims for rehabilitation and compensation. All new claims from that date will be assessed under an improved MRCA .

What this means for TPI: The TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated) rate under the VEA remains indexed at the March rate for existing recipients . However, VEA veterans who were previously denied TPI because of the “alone test” (where the veteran’s incapacity had to be caused solely by service) may now be able to apply for the Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP) under the MRCA from 1 July 2026. The MRCA does not have the same “alone test” .

What you should do: If you were denied TPI in the past, speak to a financial adviser or contact DVA to understand if you may now be eligible for SRDP under the MRCA .

What Is the SRDP vs Incapacity Payments?

If you are eligible for SRDP under the MRCA, you will be given a choice between SRDP and Incapacity Payments.

Important: SRDP is reduced by offsets, including your permanent impairment compensation (deducted dollar-for-dollar) and part of your military superannuation . The choice between SRDP and incapacity payments is permanent and cannot be reversed. You are required to get advice from a qualified financial adviser before making this decision .

Common Mistakes Veterans Make

1. Assuming the Increase Is Automatic

Solution: While the increase is automatic for most veterans , you should still check your first payment on 16 April 2026 to confirm the new rate has been applied. Mistakes can happen, so verify your own payment.

2. Not Understanding the Income and Assets Test

Solution: The Service Pension is means-tested. A common misunderstanding is believing disability compensation payments are subject to income and assets tests. DCP is exempt . However, other income and assets can reduce your Service Pension.

3. Not Knowing About the 1 July 2026 Changes

Solution: The new thresholds and limits from 1 July 2026 can affect your Service Pension. Check the new income free areas and asset limits to ensure you are receiving the correct rate.

4. Getting the Wrong Advice on SRDP

Solution: The choice between SRDP and Incapacity Payments is permanent and cannot be reversed. You must get independent financial advice . Do not make a decision without understanding the offsets that apply to SRDP.

5. Missing the Deadline for VEA Claims

Solution: The VEA and DRCA close to new claims from 1 July 2026. If you have a pre-existing condition, you should lodge your claim before this date to be assessed under the current rules. After 1 July, all claims are under the MRCA .
